WILFING - What was I looking for?

There is a new term spreading around the internet and it's called WILFING.

All of us are familiar with the term Surfing, and i'm not talking about that fun activity that takes place in the ocean. I'm talking about surfing web pages on the internet. Kind of like browsing a store to see what they have, never intending on buying anything. At least that's what I tell the sales associate every time I walk into Best Buy.
Apparently Wilfing is the new surfing. When you surf the net, apparently you have an idea of what you are looking for. When you are wilfing, it is more like being distracted by the many links and objects on web pages that grab your attention and pull you away from what you were doing. Once you start clicking on links to other pages it is easy to get distracted and never return to site that you started on. When 10 minutes has passed and you are on some new start ups web site, or adding rss feeds to your reader, or are now playing asteroids in a widget of a homepage then you have been wilfing. After 10 minutes you think to yourself 'self, where am I and what am I doing' then you have been caught Wilfing. Wilfing is a great time waster and may even result in you finding some very interesting things. Unfortunately it is bad for business. There are many reports now in the UK that are stating that Wilfing is consuming more and more of employees time on the internet. That can't be good for business! That's why most companies restrict internet use for employees so that the company can control your Wilfing at work.
Who can blame people? There are so many cool things that can be accessed using the Internet that it is virtually impossible not to be distracted. I'll give you 2 products that can consume a user and cause them to lose all track of time. One is Google Earth. The second one is You Tube. How many time have you caught yourself just going to look at one thing and all of a sudden it's 30 minutes later and you're still searching for Bill Gates house or the next American Idol video? There are a million things out there that will pull your attention away from what you are doing that I'm shocked it has taken this long to give it a name. It is now my new favorite word. I love it because anybody that says it doesn't happen to them is lying or not very tech savvy.
It's like the old saying...'Curiosity killed the cat'...
Of course it did..the cat was Wilfing!
All of us have a curious nature and because of that we will be guilty of Wilfing at some point while 'browsing' the internet. It's human nature to look under the big scary rock if it has a neon blinking sign on it that says 'look at me'. Of course you're going to check it out.

I will not admit to Wilfing at work, but in my spare time, I am the king of Wilfing...
